The Bigger, the Better: Insights from Liquidation Motivation

In the world of reselling and liquidation, size can truly matter. Tom Schultz of Liquidation Motivation shares insights on the evolution of his business and the strategies that keep customers coming back.

The Evolution of Liquidation Motivation

Tom's journey started in the resale industry, leading him to explore various avenues such as YouTube, bin stores, and live auctions. Today, he's proud to run a thriving business with multiple revenue streams, including:

  • YouTube Channel: Sharing valuable insights and advice on the liquidation business.

  • Bin Stores: Operating a significant number of large bin stores, with one reportedly reaching 110,000 square feet.

  • Diverse Sales Channels: Engaging in truckload sales, pallet sales, and live auctions on platforms like TikTok and Whatnot.

Tom emphasizes the importance of diversification, stating, "We're up to fourteen different revenue sources. The business is good right now and everything seems to be working."

Building a Strong Team

With about 100 employees across his stores, Tom recognizes the challenge of maintaining a capable workforce. He believes in cultivating a positive work environment and encourages employees to learn the business, even suggesting they go on to start their own ventures. He shares:

> "I encourage all my employees to leave me. I'm gonna teach you the business... If you think you can be successful, go do it on your own."

Tom's management style is rooted in kindness, and he aims to treat his employees fairly, which he believes fosters loyalty and productivity. However, he acknowledges the reality of turnover in minimum wage jobs, admitting:

> "There's a little bit of a revolving door... If you're not going to do your job, we're just going to smile and say, hey, we're going to move on from you."

The Bin Store Strategy

One of the standout features of Tom's approach is the size of his bin stores. With massive inventories, he argues that bigger stores are easier to manage than smaller ones. According to Tom:

> "Everybody thinks bigger is harder. I think smaller is harder."

His flagship store operates with four truckloads of inventory each week, allowing for a lively shopping experience that keeps customers returning. Tom believes that the excitement of finding great deals is a crucial driver of foot traffic, stating, "If a customer finds a two hundred dollar item for twelve bucks, they're going to tell thirty people."

A Pure Bin Experience

Tom is adamant about maintaining a pure bin experience without retail hybrids. He believes that every item, regardless of value, should be in the bins. This strategy helps create a buzz and encourages impulse buying, as customers uncover treasures hidden among the bins.

As Tom continues to develop his business, his insights serve as a valuable lesson for anyone in the liquidation space. The key takeaway? Embrace size, foster a positive work environment, and keep the excitement alive for your customers.
